Majestic Care of Livonia is excited to shine the spotlight on resident Derrick Hackett’s Success Story!
Derrick admitted to us in March of this year with a closed head injury. He had severe medical issues that included a tracheostomy tube to help him breathe. Diane, our Respiratory Therapist, was informed that he had a number 8 trach for almost two years. Within one week, his tracheostomy was changed to a number 6 shiley, cuffless tracheostomy.
Within the next week, he was downsized to a number 4 shiley, cuffless tracheostomy and his sounds were getting louder- we attempted a speaking valve. Initially, Diane thought Mr. Hackett was gurgling, but if you listened closely, he was forming words on occasion. Speaking trials are 1-2 hours in length. Today, he is wearing his speaking valve up to 4-5 hours a day. We are hearing more sounds and hope to increase conversation. Congratulations to Mr. Hackett and his Care Team on their success!
