A nursing career can make a lasting difference in the lives of others. Now, eligible nurses may also have an opportunity to receive financial support while building their future in long-term care.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched the Nurses for Nursing Homes program, a national initiative designed to strengthen the nursing workforce and encourage more nurses to serve in qualifying nursing homes.
For eligible Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs/LVNs), the program offers up to $40,000 in student loan repayment and a $10,000 incentive stipend in exchange for a three-year service commitment at a qualifying facility. That’s up to $50,000 in potential financial support.
What Is the Nurses for Nursing Homes Program?
Working in long-term care gives nurses the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with Residents, support families, and make a difference in the lives of those who depend on their care.
The CMS Nurses for Nursing Homes program aims to support this important work by helping eligible nurses manage education-related expenses while strengthening the workforce in rural communities and areas experiencing greater nursing shortages.
Whether you’re beginning your nursing career or considering your next professional opportunity, this program may be worth exploring.
What Financial Support Is Available?
Eligible participants may qualify for two types of financial incentives:
- Up to $40,000 in student loan repayment: Assistance toward qualifying nursing education debt.
- Up to $10,000 in incentive stipend support: Financial assistance that may be available to eligible nurses who meet the program requirements, including certain applicants without student loan debt.
Payments are distributed quarterly throughout the three-year service commitment, provided participants continue to meet eligibility requirements.
Who May Qualify?
The program is designed for nursing students and licensed nurses interested in working in qualifying nursing homes or certain eligible state nursing home inspector positions.
Requirements include:
- Holding an active RN or LPN/LVN license when beginning qualifying employment.
- Working an average of at least 30 hours per week at a qualifying facility.
- Having eligible student loan debt or meeting the program’s recent-graduate requirements for stipend eligibility.
- Committing to three years of service at an eligible facility.
Additional requirements and exceptions may apply. Not every nursing home or nursing position qualifies, so applicants should review the official program guidelines before applying.
