Name: Elizabeth Marshall
Years of Experience: 31
What has ‘empowered’ you to become a social worker?: As a juvenile, I used to patrol with my father, who was a police officer. After witnessing drug and alcohol addictions, domestic violence, child abuse and many other social dysfunctions firsthand, I decided in the 8th grade that I wanted to dedicate my life to helping others.
As we celebrate Social Work Month, what message or advice would you like to share with the community about the importance of social work in long-term care?: The elderly and chronically mentally ill is often a forgotten population, many who have little to no support from families. In long-term care, we often become their family. The staff are the ones talking with them daily, providing care, meeting their needs and doing our best to provide comfort and normalcy in a home away from home. Never underestimate how much it means to get someone a cup of coffee or take the time to listen to them. It brings a sense of joy and inner peace to be able to be an advocate and support system for others at one of the most vulnerable and fragile times of their life.
